Art for life / Art for Living
On the occasion of its first international event, Lab’Bel was entrusted with a carte blanche for the SWAB Contemporary Art Fair in Barcelona. In response, Lab’Bel developed a multifaceted inquiry into the position of the artist. Lab’Bel curates solo projects at the fair and organizes an exhibition, Art for Life / Art for Living, an artistic intervention at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, The World Trapped in the Self (Mirrors for Windows) and round tables at the CCCB. This group show was made in collaboration with Swab Art Fair, Gasworks (London), Hangar (Barcelona) and Le Pavillon du Palais de Tokyo (Paris).
The works selected for the exhibition Art for Life / Art for Living investigate the place of the emergent artist in our society. These artworks attempt not only to delineate the artist’s role and his/her expectations, but also the social, economic, and ideological challenges that the artist regularly confronts: through a manipulation of the analytical approach, the artist becomes aware of this own practice and the nature of his/her profession and experience. A portrait of a visual artist today emerges, as if reconstituted from a beam of propositions, often playful or unexpected, erected to better undermine or feel the public’s perception of contemporary creative practices.
