Works acquired in 2022

The Mailed Paintings series was begun in 2004 by German artist Karin Sander. The process of creating these conceptual works is always the same. Without protection or prior manipulation, the artist sends white canvases in the post to various exhibition venues. The surface of each canvas is gradually marked by the wear and tear of their respective postal journeys, and various traces or marks appear. Whether in transit or when displayed on a museum wall, these Mailed Paintings are continually being produced and exhibited.

As part of the one hundredth anniversary of The Laughing Cow© and the celebratory exhibition Elle Rit (She’s laughing), which took place at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2021, seven canvases were sent by the artist from her Berlin studio and travelled to different international destinations. Each canvas passed through five Laughing Cow© factories (Lons-le Saunier, France; Tangier, Morocco; 10th of Ramadan City, Egypt; Leitchfield, United States, and Thủ Dầu Một, Vietnam, before encountering all those who allow this cow and cheese to exist on all continents, and finally returning to Paris for an exhibition open to the general public.
